Please note that the grade syllabus does change from year to year. This page should only be used to give you a general idea of what is expected of each grade.

| Novice | White belt (Shiro obi)/Shoshinsha (novice or beginner) |
| 9th Kyu | Orange belt (Kukyu) |
| 8th Kyu | Red belt (Hachikyu) |
| 7th Kyu | Yellow belt (Shichikyu) |
| 6th Kyu | Green belt (Rokkyu) |
| 5th Kyu | Purple belt (Gokyu) |
| 4th Kyu | Purple belt with stripe (Yonkyu) |
| 3rd Kyu | Brown belt (Sankyu) |
| 2nd Kyu | Brown belt with one stripe (Nikyu) |
| 1st Kyu | Brown belt with two stripes (Ikkyu) |
| 1st Dan | Shodan - Black belt (first level) |
| 2nd Dan | Nidan - Black belt (Second level) |
| 3rd Dan | Sandan - Black belt (Second level) |
| 4th Dan | Yondan - Black belt (Fourth level) |
