Sensei David Austin
Sensei Austin started his training at the Canlo S.K.C in 1984 under the instruction of Sensei Roy Eve.
In 1988 the club amalgamated with Egham Kihon to form Egham S.K.C.
In 1989 he passed his first Dan Black belt grading
and had been competing for a number of years. By his own admissions,
the early years were about figuring out ‘what not to do' and generally learning the hard way! In 1992 though, things changed.
He passed his 2nd Dan and after a family bereavement and some words of encouragement from his Dad,
he went on to win the West Sussex open Senior individual Kumite title,
got 2nd in the Kata and joint 3rd in the team Kata and Kumite events. He was also awarded the tournaments ‘most outstanding Karateka’ (Titles that he also managed to defend in successive years.) He carried on his winning ways at Hayes, Essex and narrowly missed out on a last 16 finish at the National championships. In 1996 he was selected for the Southern region kumite squad and trained diligently under Sensei Gary Harford. He continued with this until the squad folded due to financial cuts within the region.
Undeterred, he went twice to train by invitation at Liverpool’s world famous Red Triangle club. He found these two weeks of intensive training to be a rewarding, inspirational, exhausting and at times terrifying experience!
In 1995 Sensei Austin passed his 3rd Dan and in 2002 he passed his 4th Dan.
2003/4 was a mixed year for Sensei Austin. He sustained a broken back in a road accident and after starting his recovery was then diagnosed with cancer. He was off work for nearly two years and battled depression. On reflection, he feels this was a positive thing which spurred him back into training 3 times a day, 6 days a week! In the January of 2005 he achieved one of his life long goals of being selected for the England squad. He is currently working on his 5th Dan grading and a major tournament win.
Sensei Austin is a fully qualified Kugb instructor and assessor, but has also studied various other martial arts including Jujitsu, Aikido, Hapkido, Tai boxing, Modern Arnis, Kickboxing and submission wrestling. He has done various security and door work and likes to keep the sessions he teaches “in the real world”.
He believes in training hard and enjoying the training that you do. But he also understands the pressures of family life, illness and general lack of fitness and motivation that people can suffer from.
Sensei Robin Lomax
Sensei Robin Lomax started training in 1979 in the North West at the age of 22.
He sucessfully qualified as 1st Dan Back Belt in 1982 and has held his 3rd Dan Black Belt
Grade since 1989. He is currently working to re-take one section to qualify as 4th Dan Back Belt.
Robin is also qulaified as a KUGB Judge and intends to qualify as a referee when
personal considerations permit.
Robin has been married for nearly 25 years and has a son age 22 and daughter age 19.
Robin’s professional carreer has meant he has moved frequently around the UK and spent a year working in the USA.
Robin has trained throughout this period at clubs in Birmingham, Gosport, Boston USA, Basingstoke, Poynton,
Liverpool’s Red Triangle and Sensei Enoeda’s Club in London before joining Egham in 1998.
For many years Robin also attended the full week training courses in Torbay, Lancaster
and Crystal Palace receiving instruction from many of the most senior KUGB instructors.
Robin’s experience as an instructor started in 1988 having recently returning from
USA he and wife Julia founded a KUGB karate club at Chandlers Ford, near Southampton.
Robin was chief instructor at the club for 8 years until work a forced a family move.
The Chandlers Ford club has continued to develop and is successfully run by one of Robins
original students. Following the move (back to the North West) Robin and Julia established
another KUGB club in Macclesfield which ran sucessfully for 2 years when it was merged with
the nearby Poynton Club and Robin and the family re-located again to the London area.
Since joining Egham Robin has routinely instructed at the club.
Sensei Roy Eve
Sensei Roy Eve started training in 1976 at Ashford S.K.C.
Later that year the club moved to the Egham Sports Centre.
The club's name changed to the Kihon Karate Club, and later became Egham S.K.C.
He started instructing at Egham in 1978, as a 1st Kyu.
Now as a long standing member of the K.U.G.B, a qualified Karate instructor
he holds the grade of 3rd Dan. His gradings having been conducted solely
by Japanese instructors Sensei K. Enoeda, Sensei H. Tomita & Sensei H. Kanazawa.
Between 1983 & 1989 he was also running the successful Canlo Karate Club in Chertsey. Sadly he had to close the club due to work and other commitments.
During his time as an instructor he has guided over 75 students through their gradings to obtain Dan grades. Some of which
have gone on to open and run successful clubs of their own.
In 2005 he handed over the running of the Egham S.K.C to his former student & good friend David Austin. He still supports the club, and continues to instruct, getting great satisfaction from watching the club members at competitions and higher Dan gradings. Two of which Chris Hoyes & Blyth Baker both having started training at Egham are becoming very competent instructors in their own right, and competitors in both kumite and kata.
Sensei Malcolm Williams
Sensei Malcolm Williams started his martial arts career at the age of 19 in 1983 at Kihon Karate Club. This later was to become Egham Karate Club when it merged with the Canlo Club from Chertsey. Malcolm, (before the merging of the clubs) kept the Kihon club running for a period of years when the previous Sensei had to suddenly retire due to personal reasons.
In 1990 Malcolm passed his 1st Dan. This gave him great satisfaction due to the personal sacrifices he had made in keeping the club running. In 1993 he went on to pass his 2nd Dan from Sensei K Enoeda at Crystal Palace.
Malcolm is currently the most long standing member of the club and one of the most senior coaches. He enjoys passing on his knowledge and seeing the students grow in skill and self-confidence when practicing karate. He likes the ‘mental side’ of the training, in particular the strengths brought to the fore by training and persevering in trying to “get it right”.
Malcolm’s personal preference is towards Kata and the usage of weapons such as the Bo and Bokken.

Sensei Chris Hoyes
Chris Hoyes is a 3rd Dan and fully qualified KUGB instructor.
Chris joined Egham Karate Club in 1992, at the age of 10.
He quickly moved through the grades to achieve his black belt at the age of 14 under
the instruction of Sensei Roy Eve. Each kyu grade having been conducted by Sensei Enoeda, and Sensei Ohta.
Chris started competing at a young age, winning medals in both Kata and Kumite at many regional events.
After extensive training on a daily basis Chris achieved his Black Belt Second Dan
on his first attempt in 1999, conducted by Sensei Enoeda.
Chris continues to compete in competitions, winning various medals in both Kata and Kumite.
He recently won joint 3rd place in the Team Kumite at the Southern Region Championships.
Chris has just passed his black belt 3rd Dan, after more than six years training, including 8 months intensive training 6 days a week.
Sensei Tom Scally
Sensei Scallys’ first taste of martial arts was studying judo which he did for 6 years at the Ko Saru Kai club in Hersham as a boy.
He joined Egham Karate Club in November 1997 aged 20 and has been an active member ever since. Tom has competed at many tournaments since he was an orange belt with varying levels of success, but has always come away having enjoyed and learned from the experience.
He enjoys the competition scene and his first major success came at the KUGB Southern Region championships where he took Gold in the 7th kyu and below Kata event.
On the 7th March 2001 Tom was awarded his Shodan under the watchful eye of Sensei Enoeda. He passed this grade second time around, as he got injured the first time round during the Jyu Kumite section of the grading. This is something which he fully admits was his own fault, but mistakes, painful or otherwise only lead to a better understanding of your own karate!
Tom has a good knowledge of Karate and martial arts history. He enjoys all aspects of karate, but especially likes Kumite, kumite based bunkai, and applying traditional Kata techniques to Modern Street and self protection situations.
Owing to injury and travel commitments, Tom has yet to take his 2nd Dan. He hopes to take this in the near future which is something Sensei Austin won't let him forget!
Sensei Blyth Baker
Blyth Baker is a 2nd Dan and a fully qualified KUGB Instructor. He originally joined Egham Karate Club in 1987 when he was 11 years old. Through his early years, the training at Egham provided him with the foundations for his Karate career.
Later in life, Blyth moved to Plymouth for 5 years and trained under both the main club and instructed at the university club. As Chairman and Kumite captain, he steered a team towards a prestigous win of South West Champions.
Blyth has also studied various other martial arts ranging from Judo to Ju-Jitsu
and has since moved back to Egham and is training under Sensei Austin.
